A Fōlauga Shaped by People, Place, and Service
Le Lā-'Afa emerged from a fōlauga shaped by people, place, and service. Across work in community development, youth development, governance, policy, research, and health, one lesson remained consistent: effective solutions depend on understanding context, building trusted relationships, and connecting people with the right knowledge, skills, and expertise.
Meaningful and sustainable outcomes are not achieved through one-size-fits-all approaches. They are achieved through trusted relationships, deep contextual understanding, and bringing together the right and appropriate people, knowledge, and expertise at the right time.
Through regional collaboration and international engagement, enduring relationships were built with Pacific professionals, researchers, translators, practitioners, community leaders, elders, and emerging leaders across the region. These relationships now form an important foundation of Le Lā-'Afa and its ability to convene the most suitable people, perspectives, and capabilities for each engagement. The business name is inspired by the Samoan proverb:
“A fisaga le matagi, sisi le lā fala. A lutaluta le tai, sisi le lā 'afa.”
When the breeze is light and gentle, raise the pandanus sail. When the seas are rough, raise the sennit sail. The meaning of Le Lā-'Afa is grounded in this wisdom: different circumstances require different strengths, and good judgement is not using the same sail for every journey but knowing which sail to raise given different circumstances. Le Lā-'Afa recognises the importance of understanding context and applying the appropriate knowledge, skills, and approaches to navigate changing circumstances.
